Tips for Choosing Service Carts

  • Start with the loadNote the heaviest load, its size and how it is packed. Pick a cart with a rated capacity that leaves room to spare.
  • Count the shelves you needTwo-shelf carts suit bulky items; three to five shelves sort smaller parts and supplies by level.
  • Choose casters for your floorNon-marking rubber or polyurethane casters protect finished floors and run quietly. Larger wheels roll easier over joints and ramps.
  • Measure doors and aislesCheck door widths, elevator sizes and aisle turns before choosing a cart length and width.
  • Think about accessOpen shelves load fastest, box and mesh carts keep loads contained, and lock-up carts secure valuable stock.
  • Add a ladder for high shelvesStock pickers combine a cart and a step ladder, so staff can pick from high shelving safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between steel and plastic service carts?

Steel carts offer the highest capacities and are welded for heavy daily use. Plastic structural foam carts are lighter, quieter and will not dent or rust, which suits food service, healthcare and offices.

How much weight can a service cart hold?

Most of our steel shelf service carts are rated to 1,000 lbs. Panel trucks and drywall carts go up to 2,500 lbs, and each product page lists the rating for every model.

Do you carry carts for drywall and plywood?

Yes. Panel trucks, drywall carts, lumber carts and A-frame carts are designed to move sheet goods safely.

What is a stock picker?

A stock picker is a shelf cart with a built-in step ladder. The ladder is spring-loaded and locks to the floor when weight is applied, so staff can reach high shelves and load the cart in one trip.

Can I get carts with non-marking casters?

Yes. Many models come with non-marking casters, and we can suggest options to protect finished floors.
