How to Choose a Storage Cabinet
- Match the cabinet to the hazardUse the colour and type made for what you are storing, and never mix acids with flammables.
- Check capacity limitsKeep within 60 gal of Category I to III liquids per cabinet, and size up by adding cabinets.
- Measure the spaceCheck width, depth, height and door swing. Slimline, wall and undercounter models fit tight spots.
- Plan shelf loadsSteel cabinets carry 150 lb per shelf; heavy-duty models carry 300 lb or more.
- Think about securityEvery cabinet locks. Add crossbar models or padlocks for higher-security areas.
- Keep it organisedBin cabinets, extra shelves and dollies make the cabinet work harder.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a safety cabinet for flammable liquids?
Fire codes in Ontario and across Canada, along with NFPA 30 and OSHA 1910.106 that these cabinets are built to, limit how much flammable liquid you can keep in a work area outside an approved cabinet. A safety cabinet slows heat from reaching the containers in a fire and contains leaks. Check with your local fire authority for the exact limits at your site.
How much can I store in one safety cabinet?
No more than 60 US gal of Category I, II or III flammable liquids, or 120 US gal of Category IV liquids, in a single cabinet. Larger cabinets, such as 90 and 96 gal models and drum cabinets, suit Category IV liquids or quantities spread across several cabinets.
What do the cabinet colours mean?
Yellow is for flammable liquids, red for paints and inks, blue for acids and corrosives, green for pesticides and white for hazardous waste. Colour coding helps staff and first responders identify the contents quickly. Always follow the labels and your safety data sheets.
Manual or self-closing doors?
Manual doors stay open until you close them. Self-closing doors close and latch on their own, and are held open by a fusible link that melts in a fire. Many sites and insurers prefer self-closing doors because a fire cannot reach cans left in an open cabinet.
Should safety cabinets be vented?
Cabinets come with vent openings that are sealed with caps and flame arrestors. Most codes do not require venting, and an unvented cabinet keeps its fire rating. If you do vent one, use the correct duct and follow the manufacturer and local code instructions.
Can I store acids and flammables together?
No. Corrosives can attack steel and react with other chemicals. Store acids and bases in a blue corrosive cabinet, ideally on separate shelves or in separate cabinets, and keep them away from flammables.
What is the difference between welded and knock-down cabinets?
Welded cabinets arrive assembled and stay square and rigid for years. Knock-down cabinets ship flat to save on freight and assemble on site. Our heavy-duty knock-down models still carry 300 lb per shelf.
Can you build custom storage cabinets?
Yes. Our heavy-duty cabinets can be built in 20, 18 or 16 ga steel in custom sizes and colours, with options like extra shelves, wardrobe interiors, forklift bases and expanded metal doors. Send us your size and use and we will quote it.
Not sure which cabinet fits your site?
Tell us what you need to store, how much and where it will go, and we will recommend the right cabinet and send a quote.
