Choosing the shelf surface is one of the practical decisions in a System 800 wide span shelving layout. Wire, galvanized steel pans and OSB wood decks each give you a different way to support cartons, bins and stockroom inventory.
Start with what you store, how you pick it and the intended weight per level. Then match the decking to the frames, beams and supports rather than selecting a shelf surface in isolation.
Wire decking: an open shelf surface
System 800 wire shelving decks use galvanized 7-gauge wire with 14-gauge support channels. Each section is 24 inches wide, with depths matched to the listed 18, 24, 30 and 36-inch frames.
The open surface makes it easier to see through shelf levels. It can suit cartons, bins and items with an appropriate base, but small loose parts may need a bin or a solid shelf surface. Share the actual items you plan to store so the deck choice can be checked.
- Consider wire when an open shelf surface is useful.
- Confirm the base size and shape of the items being stored.
- Use System 800 components; do not assume pallet-rack wire decks are interchangeable.
Steel pans: a solid metal surface
System 800 galvanized steel shelf pans create a solid deck from individual drop-in sections. The listed pans use 17-gauge steel and are 6 inches wide, with depths to suit the four System 800 frame depths.
A steel deck is worth considering when you prefer a solid, all-metal surface instead of open wire or a wood panel. Each pan is a section rather than a complete full-width shelf, so the quote needs to include the required quantity for every bay and shelf level.
- Choose the pan depth for the nominal frame depth.
- Include the number of bays and shelf levels in your request.
- Confirm the full shelf configuration and loading arrangement before use.
OSB wood decks: an economical panel option
System 800 OSB wood shelving decks use Canadian-made oriented strand board. They are an economical alternative to an all-metal surface and come in cut sizes for the listed frame depths and 48, 72 and 96-inch beam widths.
The actual panel dimensions are smaller than the nominal shelving dimensions. For example, wood deck 808 1872 measures 16¼ inches deep by 71½ inches wide for the listed 18-inch-deep, 72-inch-wide configuration. Use the product table and confirm fit rather than ordering a panel cut to the frame’s nominal dimensions.
Wood shelf supports are available for 24, 30 and 36-inch-deep shelving and are recommended for the deeper 30 and 36-inch configurations. No separate 18-inch wood support is offered because the shallower depth generally does not need one.
Match the deck to the complete shelf
There is no single load capacity that applies to every System 800 shelf. Beam profile, beam width, decking, supports and the way the load is placed all belong in the selection process. Ask for the rating of your proposed configuration rather than applying a figure from another rack.
If you are adding to existing shelving, send photographs of the frame, beam connections and current deck, together with measurements. Similar-looking parts should not be assumed to fit or perform the same way.
What to send for a shelving quote
- Available floor space, room height and a simple layout sketch.
- Preferred frame depth, frame height and beam width.
- Number of bays and shelf levels.
- Stored-item dimensions and intended weight per shelf.
- Your preferred deck surface and whether installation is required.
- Photos and measurements if matching an existing system.
