How to Choose Dock Equipment
- Measure the height differenceMeasure from the dock to the trailer floor at its highest and lowest, loaded and empty.
- Know your axle loadAdd the weight of the forklift and its heaviest load, then choose a capacity above it.
- Plates for hand trucks, boards for forkliftsCurbs on dock boards add strength and stop wheels from running off.
- Keep slopes gentlePick a longer plate, board or ramp so the slope stays comfortable for your equipment.
- Chock every trailerStore a chock on a wall bracket beside each door so drivers always use it.
- Protect the buildingBumpers at the dock face, plus guards at corners, doors and racks, prevent costly repairs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a dock plate and a dock board?
Dock plates have no raised curbs, so they are lighter, cost less and are easier to manoeuvre on. They suit hand trucks, pallet jacks and lighter loads. Dock boards have raised side curbs that add strength and keep equipment from running off the edge, so choose a dock board for forklifts and powered pallet trucks.
How do I choose the right size of dock board or dock plate?
Measure the height difference between the dock and the truck bed, and note the heaviest axle load that will cross: the equipment plus its load. Longer plates and boards handle bigger height differences at a gentler slope. Send us your numbers and we will match a part number from our selection charts.
What if the height difference is more than 11 inches?
A standard plate or board gets too steep beyond about 11 in. Use a dock ramp combination, which adds a rigid ramp section, or raise the trailer with wheel risers.
When do I need a yard ramp instead of a dock board?
A dock board bridges a dock and a trailer. A yard ramp replaces the dock completely: forklifts drive from the ground up into the trailer. Yard ramps are ideal for buildings without docks, for extra capacity when docks are full, or for loading in the yard.
Do I need wheel chocks and trailer stands?
Wheel chocks stop a trailer from rolling or creeping away from the dock, and trailer stands support the nose of an uncoupled trailer so it cannot tip forward as a forklift drives in. Both are widely required in workplace safety programs for loading docks. Use a chock on every trailer at the dock, and a stand whenever the trailer is not coupled to a tractor.
Laminated or steel-faced dock bumpers?
Laminated rubber bumpers absorb over 80% of the impact and suit most docks. If your dock sees air-ride trailers or yard jockeys that move up and down against the bumper, steel-faced bumpers resist that grinding wear and last much longer.
Are LED dock lights worth it?
Yes, for most docks. LED heads use a fraction of the power of old spot lamps, stay cool to the touch and last about 60,000 hours, so you replace bulbs far less often.
Can you build custom sizes?
Yes. Dock plates, dock boards, walk ramps, wheel risers and yard ramps can be built to custom widths, lengths and capacities, and in steel as well as aluminum. Tell us what you need and we will quote it.
Need help sizing a dock board or ramp?
Send us the height difference, the width you need and the heaviest load that will cross, and we will recommend the right equipment and send a quote.
